Good day fab readers! Today I am so pleased to introduce you to two of the hottest bloggers I know and the brains behind one of the coolest blogs in around, its Carlis and Katya, of Spicy Candy DC. The two best friends started blogging about 2 years ago, and when I first started blogging, theirs was one of the very first I came across, and I am always inspired by them. If you need to learn a thing or two about layering, color blocking, amazing denim looks, you must check out their effortlessly chic looks on their blog. Muy Caliente, it is Carlis and Katya of Spicy Candy DC!
BTW Birthday Wishes to Miss Katya.
Sai Sankoh: What inspired you to start blogging?
Carlis and Katya: We started our blog two years ago looking for a creative outlet and fun hobby to do on the weekends — discovering Karla’s Closet and Chictopia really inspired us and gave us that extra push to start our own blog and embark on this fun journey! Looking back, making that decision really changed our lives.
Sai Sankoh: Who do you think is the most influential personality in the fashion world, and why?
Carlis: I really love Anna Wintour. I think that her mysterious persona and unique style is respected on a whole different level in the fashion industry. I remember watching a documentary of her a few months ago and it really inspired me to keep on doing what I love, but to also make wise decisions to build a strong foundation.
Katya: I have to go classic on this one and say Coco Chanel. The world will never be the same after her influence on women’s wear and of course, the classic LBD is a fashion staple in every woman’s closet (well at least it should be). I remember growing up watching Chanel runway shows filled with stunning black and white looks coming down the runway — my life hasn’t been the same ever since (and yes, I do own a LOT of black and white if you haven’t noticed by now) haha!
Sai Sankoh: What is the one essential item in your wardrobe you couldn’t live without?
Carlis: I can’t leave without my vintage tangerine Dior blazer, I get all excited thinking of the day I found it. That blazer will be with me forever. I also love my hats! I have so many and I love them all.
Katya: Skinny jeans! I have a serious obsession and if I could, I would own a pair in EVERY style & color! My number 2 and 3 would be blazers and blouses — my usual “go to” outfit is some sort of combination of all three!
Sai Sankoh: If you could give one piece of style advice, what would it be?
Carlis: I think it’s very important to dress in a way that you feel comfortable and confident, if you are missing any of those two ingredients any item you wear will not look as good as it probably should.
Katya: Don’t be afraid to experiment with trends, colors, styles, etc, but always remember to stay true to your own unique style otherwise it will feel like you’re wearing someone else’s skin instead of your own.
Sai Sankoh: Who is your fashion icon?
Carlis: Catherine Baba and Christine Centenera
Katya: Miroslava Duma and Kate Moss
Sai Sankoh: How have you developed your style?
Carlis: My style changes depending on my mood and the weather, but over the years I realized that I dress for comfort — I don’t like wearing things that are too tight or too short.
Katya: I’m not sure how I developed it…I guess many years of experimenting (and God knows I’ve been through some really funky phases lol), but I have come to realize that I absolutely love basics, classic pieces, and high heels. I think I was born in heels!
Sai Sankoh: What is your favorite outfit that you’ve worn, and why?
Carlis: My favorite outfit is probably my leather pants, with silk blue blouse, fur vest and DIY neon collar. It’s comfortable yet fun and it’s so Carlis hahhah!
Katya: Oh this is a tough one…hummm so many to remember lol. I guess if I absolutely must pick, I’d say it was a really comfy outfit I wore to a day at the winery earlier this spring — it was a nude maxi skirt paired up with an off the shoulder sweater and hat. I felt so comfortable that day, and Carlis and I had a fantastic time tasting wine and just lounging around…maybe that’s why I loved it so much. Sometimes what you wear is enhanced by the experience you have in those clothes…I think that’s exactly what happened here!
Sai Sankoh: What beauty products can’t you live without?
Carlis: My Maybelline Ultra liquid eyeliner! Ask Katya, I freak out without it, it goes with me everywhere!
Katya: A good mascara (I use Dior Show) and pretty shades of lipsticks (my current favs are pastel pink and coral colors).
Sai Sankoh: What do you wear on vacation/holiday? Favorite pair of shoes/boots?
Carlis: Depends where im going i guess. You can never go wrong with a cute little romper. My current favorite shoes are my colorful Chinese Laundry wedges, I bought them at South Moon Under not too long ago.
Katya: I love to vacation on the beach (because I was born on the beach, I have a special attachment to it). So I usually bring my levis vintage cut offs, a bunch of cropped T’s, aviator sunnies, and fun summer dresses. Favorite pair of shoes are my new Zara black open toe heels I just wore to our South Moon Under lookbook launch. They are so classy and sexy!
Sai Sankoh:Do you prefer designer, or Vintage ? Where do you shop?
Carlis: Definitely VINTAGE!!! Nothing beats wearing a unique item that has character.
Katya: I actually prefer a combination of both. I love investing in a good bag or pair of shoes, but I do mix in a lot of vintage into my wardrobe, especially blazers!!!
Sai Sankoh:Being in the blogging industry, Where do you see fashion and technology heading?
Carlis: Who knows!? Fashion changes every day — somewhere good for sure.
Katya: Technology has transformed the way we see fashion and it’s incredible the amount of new opportunities that come with that connectivity! I love that someone from a very small town can now find inspiration from (and shop) the looks of their favorite bloggers, brands, and stores at a click of a key. So I only see even bigger and better things to come int he future.
Sai Sankoh: Where do you see your blog headed in a few years?
Carlis: I hope our blog keeps on growing and most importantly, I hope we keep on meeting interesting, fun and smart people like your self.
Katya: I second that
Sai Sankoh: What advice do you have for up and coming fashion blogs like us?
Carlis: I def think it’s important that you are in this blogging industry for the right reasons. It can be draining and repetitive, but if you love what you do and you commit to it 100%, you will see results you prob thought were never possible.
Katya: Find your own voice, work hard, and be clear about why you got into this and what you want to achieve from it — the rest will take care of it self.
